Happy Halloween! Today is officially Halloween, one thing I’ve noticed in the blog world is holidays start long before they are actually here. I feel like it has been Halloween for over a month LOL. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, next to Christmas of course. It is a time when creativity is everywhere.
One thing that is important on Halloween night is keeping those kiddos safe. With Honey it is pretty easy she is only 6 so when it comes to trick or treating we of course take her from door to door. However my boys age 14 and 11 (I’m wondering when they will stop trick or treating). No longer want to stay with us, I mean we are parents EWW!
However I had one bad Halloween experience when I was young that has forever stayed in my mind. Thankfully it was not “terrible” though it felt like it at the time. My friend and I were trick or treating I was probably Nick’s age 11 or so. We saw a group of kids walking towards us and they had on all black. My friend told me to hold on to my bag tight. I had no idea why she said that but I tired to anyway. As the boys approached us they started running and ripped my bag out of my hands. I was so scared and upset that I ran home.
I was not hurt but it was a traumatic experience. I want to give my boys the freedom of enjoying the holiday without the dreaded “parents” tagging along. They are allowed to trick or treat with a group of friends but not on their own. In fact my boys, as I write this Saturday night, are out with some friends trick or treating in a neighborhood that celebrates on the first Saturday before Halloween.
I know that soon trick or treating will be replaced with parties. Parties bring another whole level to safety. My husband and I are some what protective parents, I think in this day and age you have to be. I will not let the boys over some ones house unless I’ve spoken with the parents. I will not let them go to a party where adults are not supervising. Buddy still has a few years before he reaches that age. I want my children to grow and become responsible and enjoy the fun activities with their friends but not at the cost of their safety.
What I very well may do when this time arises is allow the boys to have their own Halloween party at our home. This will at least give me the upper hand when it comes to making sure that they are safe. We discussed having a party this year but it just got put on the back burner and sure enough next they you know it is Halloween.
